FRESHENING UP THE FLOWER BEDS

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

I don't know how it is in your neck of the woods, but around here the weather can't decide if its going to be warm or freezing from day to day.  Needless to say, we've been a little hesitant to freshen up our flower beds.

The weather's been warm for about a week and looks good so we jumped at the chance to get outside and spiff up our flower beds out front.

We have two of these planters on either side of our front door.

Don't you love the rocks?  Hopefully I'm not the only one who gets lazy during the winter months.  Those rocks held down our Christmas topiaries  and after I packed up the Christmas decorations I just left the rocks there.

You can tell by this after picture that it was later in the evening by the time we finished.  I realize the front door is covered in dust but that will have to wait until next weekend.

I am hoping these boxwood's make it through our Oklahoma summers.  We've tried all kinds of flowers in these, but the west sun really heats up our porch in the late afternoon and so far we haven't had anything still living by late July.  Fingers Crossed for the boxwood's!

We also emptied out all the mulch from the flower bed, pulled weeds and gave the monkey grass a much needed crewcut buzz.

I planted several boxwood's in our planters this year and am really loving how they look.

I know the pot looks a little shabby but I like it that way.  Plus, I was lazy and didn't want to go find my black spray paint. Ha!

My grand-dad gave me this plow and it used to sit in his garden too.  We added some creeping phlox to fill in underneath it.

I still need to add more pillows to the couch, but I've got time.

Do you think its obvious that a firefighter lives here?  LOL

I'm so proud of my guy -- he just made Captain!  There were lots of long nights and long days studying and preparing for this exam.

We've had most of our to -do list on hold because of the upcoming testing process with the city.  Like several months of holding so it feels so good to be moving forward now and knowing all the studying has paid off.  I don't say we loosely here.  Promoting within the department is a lengthy process, competitive and requires dedication to the books.  So pretty much that meant that I took care of every.single.thing while he studied.  I'm not kidding.  At all.  I can laugh now -- its over. Ha!

Our flower bed project took a few hours but it felt so good to get it all done plus everything looked much better after we were finished.

There's still a ton to do.  Wrap the bottom of the columns in rough cedar, scrub the cedar walls, re-stain the cedar walls, wash the doors & power wash the porch.  Don't you feel like our homes are always a work in progress?

Above you can see our crape myrtle has yet to show its lovely blooms but the wisteria is finally showing off.

Obviously we got Spring Fever too soon, the weatherman says Oklahoma will make history on Friday morning...another freeze.  Heading to Home Depot to buy covers now. Gotta love living in Oklahoma, if you don't like the weather just wait a few days, it'll change.

PS.  On a side note -- we built our own solar screens.  You can read about how we did that & were we found the materials here.

  9. Your yard looks beautiful. I, like you, worked and planted all day on Wednesday - only to be hit by the cold front on Thursday and threat of snow on Friday. We lucked out here in Tulsa and didn't get the snow and sleet. But, today, it's rainy and cold. Crazy Oklahoma weather.

Congratulations to your husband. That's a lot of work. I'm sure he's deserving.
