Antique Red Dresser

Monday, August 29, 2011

I actually found this little lovely at a garage sale over the summer.
It's been sitting in our garage for a little bit now waiting on me, but its been crazy hot here.  Definitely not the kinda of weather to be outside doing anything.

I sanded off layers of dust and old finish then painted the bottom with two different colors of red that I had left over from other projects.  Lightly sanded and waxed the bottom then put a coat of dark walnut stain on top.

I have seen a pattern on other projects like pillows and table runners but I thought it would be neat to paint it on this dresser top.
The pattern really stands out in the picture but it is really muted and blends well.  I'm happy with it.

I'm going to put some small black porcelain knobs on these drawers.  The bottom drawer is wonky.  I've tried working on it some but have decided I would rather build a shelf there with a large basket instead.  I think I can finish that up next weekend.  I love old furniture.  I would rather find something old and clean it up rather than buy new.  In this case...I'm loving how its turning out!

"Just Married" Banner

Thursday, August 25, 2011

I've seen banners on Pinterest but really didn't have a reason to make one, but now I do!  So I did! A very sweet girl that used to babysit for us is getting married.   This was so easy and actually didn't take that long at all to put together...here's how I did mine. {or D's I should say...I'm gonna give it to her!}

1.  Grab a piece of cardstock and a ruler.  Create your template.

2.  Trace your shape onto your fabric and just start cutting.  This would have gone lots faster if I would have had a rotary cutter, but we use what we have right!  Although, after this project I want one...bad.
3.  After I had enough cut, I ran the iron over my fabric.  Take some twine and lay it on top of the fabric then fold down a small piece and ironed it in place.  I made the fold big enough that I would have room to sew it down and allow the twine to move freely.  I pinned the twine down just to hold all the "flags" in place until I sewed them in order to keep my spacing just right.  I allowed almost an inch in between each flag.

I used my Silhouette machine to cut my letters and then laid them over my fabric to paint them.  However, if you don't have one of these machines you could use print out your letters and just cut them out by hand.
 6. Paint your letters on...
 7.  Let them dry...add some ribbons...and your done!

YUM! Blueberry Muffins!

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Let me just tell ya...these were delish!  We really try to make the kitchen the center of our home.  I really want to equip my kids with the skills to know their way around a kitchen.  Luckily for me this isn't a battle because they enjoy every minute of it.

This last weekend Blake was at the pow-wow with nana & papa, Britt was gone with Jade, hubby was at the fire station so that just left me and Brooke.  Brooke decided to whip up some blueberry muffins for breakfast.
Gah, look at that butter melt on these babies hot out of the oven.
I gave these a big ole thumbs up!  My girls a good baker!
