KEEPING LETTUCE FRESH & GREEN!

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Brown lettuce is for the birds!  Our family eats a lot of lettuce on salads, wraps and sandwiches.  I feel like so much of it is wasted because after a couple days in the fridge its limp, has brown edges and is just plain gross.  Anybody out there have the same complaint?

I thought I would forever be making numerous trips to the store to buy more lettuce week after week.  That is until I saw this on pinterest...

Honestly, I was a little skeptical that this would work, but I was desperate so I tried it anyway.  Guess what?!  It totally works.

Since the kids have gone back to school I've been spending a couple hours every Sunday cooking, dicing, chopping and doing whatever I can to make the week go more smoothly.  I have now officially added packing chopped iceberg lettuce & spinach into tall canning jars and storing them in my fridge. The jars can stay in there all week long with not a brown edge anywhere!  Actually, I'm on my second week with a jar right now, its still fresh.  WOW!

Just thought I'd share since I know there has to be someone out there who hasn't seen this on Pinterest yet and hates brown lettuce.

Have you tried this yet?  I would love to know!

If you aren't already then I'd love to have you follow along...

  5. Great idea. You can also drill holes in the lid of a sterlite box and line the box with paper towels. Put a couple of paper towels on top of the lettuce. Every time you use some lettuce, replace the paper towels. Lettuce will last a long time.
