FALL ANTIQUE BUFFET VIGNETTE

Friday, October 26, 2012

The last several years I feel like I've struggled just to keep my house in order while trying to also keep up with our three kids schedules.  I've decided that starting now I'm going to work extra hard to change things up when the seasons change instead of just decorating at Christmas.  All of you blogging friends have motivated me...so THANK YOU!
While doing this small vignette, I noticed that I'm a little out of practice.  I used to do stuff like this all the time.  Funny how we stop doing things that we love just because we get busy & don't make time for them.

A lot of things on this buffet have sentimental meaning to me.  See that pine cone stuck in there?  A friend brought that back to me last fall from Louisiana.  It's HUGE.
The white ironstone pitcher came from a garage sale that our youngest daughter picked out.  The funny thing is that it has yellow flowers on the other side.  We have a little game we play and she will secretly turn it around so the yellow flowers are showing and see how long until I notice and turn it back around so it's all white again.  This has been going on for a little over a year now!

I didn't have any tapers so I just filled this vase with split peas and a tea candle light.  Love the color it adds!
I love the detail on older furniture, they just don't make things like this anymore.
And a few last shots of my arrangement...
The plague was my first Mod Podge project.  You can read about it here.
I didn't do much, because I like things simple.  However, this little project did get me in the mood to update a few other places in the house that I'll be sharing soon.
Thank you so much for stopping by for a visit!  I love receiving your comments.  It lets me know that you were here that way I can visit you back!

FRONT DOOR SPRUCING

Monday, October 22, 2012

I'm finally getting around to posting about a few front door changes that we made.  It's funny how when you see something everyday you just get used to how it looks.  This door wasn't bright red when we first painted it but it wasn't mauve either!  I really dislike mauve.  I was shocked at the difference after putting the first coat on.

The paint I used was from Home Depot and it was  Valspar Duramax exterior satin finish. The name was Quite Red.  The mixing numbers are:  Magenta Base 114-19, 105-1.88, 217-1Y26.25.  Sorry, no picture of the top of the can!

To say I was pleasantly surprised with the color choice is an understatement.  In our family, everyone has an opinion and picking out a paint color for the front door was no different.  So on one of our weekend trips to Home Depot everyone grabbed their picks which were all different shades of red.

We came home, taped them all to the front door and walked down the sidewalk so we were a good ways from the front porch and started picking our favorites.  After just a few minutes we all had our choice narrowed down to just two color swatches.  Our youngest daughter's color pick won!  I really wish I had taken a picture with all those swatches on the front door...hindsight!

It didn't take long at all to get it all painted.

A little Before and After.

I really thought I was in love with the color before and was somewhat hesitant in changing it, but now I'm so happy that we did.  And we did it as a family!

If you look again at the Before & After photo you might notice that it looks like I took our curtains down in the After photo.  I didn't.  Our home gets the west hot summer sun, so we really need those but I really wanted it to appear from outside that they were bare.

I remembered back to when some friends built their home and had dummy dormers.  They painted the inside of the windows black so you couldn't see into the attic spaceand it looked great from the road.

I took that idea and put it to use with the current curtains that were hanging there.  No I didn't paint them black! Ha!  But I did line them with a black sheet that I had packed away in the attic.  Now, from the inside of the house you see linen curtains cinched on two rods {sorry no pic} and the outside looks like they are bare windows.

Can't even tell there are curtains there can ya?  We etched those sidelight windows right after we moved in with an etching spray we bought at Hobby Lobby.  Seriously, took like 30 minutes.

Because of our busy lives it seems we can never ever finish a project in just one weekend, but we did eventually add house numbers, a door knocker and a new door pull.

As you can see by the decorations, fall has arrived! I'll be sharing more of our porch when I host the N-S-E-W Thanksgiving Traditions Link party on November 14th - 20th.

Hope you enjoyed seeing our front door makeover!

IT'S A PARTY! Link up!!!

Sunday, October 21, 2012

I hope you guys are having an awesome Sunday!  I wanted to take a quick second to share with y'all a few pics I took yesterday.

All of the guys in this aircraft are SOONER fans and they are heading out to the game.  Normally, it would be a little over a three hour drive...  But in an airplane its only a fifty minute flight!

Male bonding at its finest! LOL  So happy my guys got to fill up the backseat.  Plus, the airport is literally across the street from our house --- sweet!

SO, I didn't get a whole lot done yesterday! Ha!  I'll be working today to finish up some projects to show you guys later next week.  Can't wait to see what you've been up to!

"UPCYCLED" 1961 US GOV'T CABINET

Friday, October 19, 2012

Some friends of ours that we love dearly, are Realtors who buy & sell properties and sometimes there is furniture left in the homes.  When that happens they give me a call to see if I might want it, they are wonderful I tell ya.

This old cabinet had trim broken off, glass broken, shelves were completely gone but I loved it just because of the backside.  The back was stamped, "US GOV'T 1961".  Isn't that so cool?

This cabinet really needed a lot of love, which we were happy to give.

I didn't take pictures of the entire process, because...well I just forgot.  You can get in the rhythm of working and pictures are the last thing on the brain.

We made the shelves out of pine and routered the edges to match the routered edge on the trim that we also replaced.  We used the ends of the original pieces for a pattern.

We painted it red then distressed & glazed it to tone it down a bit, but left the inside stained wood.

The doors are imitation tin on the outside, but when you open them the inside is stained wood to match the interior.  We kept all the original brackets, the only thing we changed were the knobs on the doors and chose glass knobs.

I hand painted No.7 in the recessed area of the doors then lightly distressed/sealed it.

Here is how our little red cabinet turned out.

Let me just tell you, getting those hinges to work nearly took a miracle.  It was missing a few, so the doors didn't close correctly.  They don't make hinges like they did in 1961 so nothing matched up.  Mr. Fix It wound up having to chisel out the area, sand it and re-stain it and according to him, he enjoyed every.second.of.it.
