Better Homes & Gardens VANILLA FRENCH TOAST

Sunday, October 23, 2011

I'm so excited to be guest posting over here at Restoration Redoux! Thank you Shanna for having me.  I wanted to share one of my all time favorite breakfast recipes with you all.  Hope you ♥ it!

This is a quick & easy breakfast that is Dee-lish!  Breakfast is a big deal around our house so I'm always on the lookout for great morning recipes and this one is so dang good that I had to share it with y'all!

I like to cook ours on an griddle because you can cook so many pieces at once so I begin by melting several pats of butter on my griddle so its all kinds of buttery goodness.  I try and keep my heat around 275° so the outside doesn't get too brown before the inside cooks.

Here's the easy 1 - 2 - 3:

ingredients
  • 4 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup  half-and-half or light cream
  • 2 tablespoons  sugar
  • 2 teaspoons  vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon  ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon  ground nutmeg
  • 8 slices  dry white or whole wheat bread
  • 2 tablespoons  butter or vegetable oil
  •  Maple-flavored syrup
  •  Sliced bananas (optional)
  • VIA BHG

1.  In a bowl, beat eggs, half & half, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.  Dip bread into your mixture, making sure to coat both sides.

2.  Cook your break until golden brown, turning them once.  Serve with real maple syrup and you'll be in heaven!

And if it's a cold morning like it is here...then load up the fire place while your toast is cooking.  I even had enough time to sweep off the back porch while my toast was finishing up on the griddle.

By this time, the aroma of the vanilla french toast & bacon fills the air and helps to draw all those kiddo's down for breakfast.  A warm fire doesn't hurt either!

Not much to look at is he?  Again, sorry for not taking a true "before"  picture.  I'm always so excited to get started that I remember after several steps in to start shooting some pictures for you guys!  Anyway, this is after I gave him a good scrubbing, took apart the drawers to use for extra sign material and helped my husband tighten him up then build these shelves.
Lots of love, soft tapping with a rubber mallet and gorilla glue and this guy was well on his way to becoming something much better!

We attached the shelf from underneath so none of the hardware shows.
Isn't it amazing how much difference a little paint can make?
Found this label on the Graphics Fairy.  I love her!  I transferred this on top using what I call the PENCIL METHOD...LOL.  Blow up my image to the size I need, color the back with pencil lead, then flip it over and trace.  Leaves a great outline for you to paint in.  Probably an easier way, but I like this the best, works for me so I'm gonna stick with it!

One last close up...
I really am in L.O.V.E with how this dresser distressed with the soft blue shining through.
I really have no tried and true method of making the tops look old.  I just keep at it until I get it like I want it.  This time I mixed some Minwax dark walnut stain with faux painting glaze and put it on lightly, wiped off, repeated until I got this.  I finished it off with wax.
This is what I started with...EEK!
I adore these legs...

Again, not a great staged picture, but here he is in all his "finished" glory.  I need help in the staging department.  I'm not really good at it and we all tend to shy away from things we aren't that good at.  I'll work on it, kay.

You know, pictures speak volumes.  I think I just may add an applique to the center of this drawer.  I don't know, would that turn him into a her?  I call it a him cause of the tobacco label on top.  Obviously, I am way over thinking this!  What do you think?

Red Rooster Side Table

Friday, October 7, 2011

 I probably should have taken the time to stage this photo, but I was on my lunch break and it seems like lately I have NO time.  And when I do have the time it's dark outside so my staged pictures still stink because of lighting.  So, here is the unstaged stinky picture with good lighting. {heh heh}

I love the legs on this little table.  I actually used Krylon Cherry Red spray paint!  I loved how well it covered and that the spray can didn't hurt my finger.  I've never used this spray paint before but other can's spray nozzle are so uncomfortable that your hand cramps up.  Not with this Krylon and the color was just perfect.
I found this image via google, blew it up and just transferred it onto the top and filled it in with semi gloss black paint.  I very lightly distressed the top and sealed it.  For a previously loved little table I think she turned out pretty good.  Okay...off to the studio garage to work!

By the way...this table is for sale!
